William Hague:
'It is likely that we are going to be able to win the next election ... I put it no more strongly than that.'

Is translated into the headline
Tories will win the next election says confident Hague

Can you think of a Daily Mail headline for an historic event...?

How about:

" AB's Gromit, says something nice about the Tory party - shocker"
Aren't they all like that though?

"likely" and "ifs and buts" (unless its spelt butts and in The Sport) don't sell papers.
"New Labour will win the next election" HEADLINES.

That would be a "historic"event.
will the page have a black border round it sqad.....
Get a life Gromit, did your mother trip over a Daily Mail while she was carrying you?

If you know anything about journalism you should know that it is the Sub-Editor's job to sensationalise headlines to a story.

This is what attracts persons to read further, it also helps to sell newspapers.
Why pick on the Daily Mail, it's how they all work isn't it? A bit like this..
'hello is that prince charles?
'yes''
'Are you gay?'
'er..no'.

results in..

PRINCE CHARLES DENIES BEING GAY

And that would be one of the more thoroughly researched and factual headlines. w@nkers the lot of them.

gromit....LOL...very good.
The problem isn't with the content of the articles, which overall are factual - the problem arises because a lot of people read no further than the headlines, and you get a 'kneejerk' reaction from sensationalism.
