she was clearly given the option to go quietly or be chucked out the window. Brown's problem is that he hasn't got anyone very good to replace all those he wants to sack (this was also John Major's problem: he ended up with a cabinet full of nonentities and Portillos).

She is stepping down from the Home Office but wishes to continue as an MP. Her majority is only about 2000 so this could easily we wiped out at the next GE. Strange decision because a cabinet minister has a better chance of winning due to the extra publicity.

Therefore deep down she wants to receive the golden goodbyes and the increased pension which expand only at an election and not mid term.
