can anyone explain the appeal of the Muslim faith? I cannot for the life of me understand it, especially for women? Certainly the public image is of restrictions, antiquated customs and views, and hatred of the US and UK. Enlighten me please. And, if nobody can, maybe someone can explain why Islam is tolerated

Just the same as any faith, it offers hope to peoples who are short on it.

i suggest you go and read a few history books to understand why they have a grudge against Britain and the US.

'It is tolerated' because the vast majority of its followers are ordinary people the same as you and me. A quarter of the planet is muslim, so best not base your prejudices on what happens in countries we have picked a war with.

gromit, how can anyone find hope in a religion of hate?
Tell that to the Christians
flipnflap has got a point Gromit.

30 yrs ago the UK was not a Muslim country, no mosques and very few mosques. Now, at least 10-20% of the population, depending upon which set of statistics are hurled at you, are Muslim.......their own culture, mosques, traditions, and believe me, they are Muslims first and British second. Fanatics are hidden in the Moslem community and it is difficult to tell which is which. They want their own law and their own educational system as much as possible.

If you want to be a Muslim, why not stay and live in a Muslim country?
/// are ordinary people the same as you and me ////.

I don't how you dare class yourself an ordinary person Gromit.

You support mass murderers, and you are always ready to criticise your own country men ( if indeed you are British) in defence of it's enemies.

If you are not already a Muslim may I suggest that you join them, and then perhaps leave this country you hate so much.
AOG,

Given that you're motivated almost entirely by hatred (to ethnic minorities, different faiths, women, gays, young people etc) can you give us an idea of what percentage of this country you love?
//Now, at least 10-20% of the population//

There are 2.5 million muslims in this country (42.6million christains) in a population of 60million.

//30 yrs ago the UK was not a Muslim country//
The muslim faith was legalised in 1812 and there were muslims here prior to that.

//30 yrs ago the UK was not a Muslim country, no mosques//
It still isn't (see numbers above. Britain first mosque opened in Liverpool in 1889.

//If you want to be a Muslim, why not stay and live in a Muslim country?//
For the same reason that christains do not stay in their own country. They move for jobs, to better their selves, for the adventure.
AOG

I am ordinary in the sense that I support fair play and believe that all people should be treated equally which I believe the vast majority of this country also do. You being one of the exceptions.

I have never supported mass murders.

I criticise my fellow country men when criticism is valid. I criticise other countries as well, but I live here so I am more likely to actions that affect me or are done in my name. I don't think I critise our Government half as much as you do.

I am British and am glad to be so.

I will not be joining the muslim faith because I do not believe in Allah, God or any other deity. The muslim faith is alien to my beliefs and I do not need a 1300 year old book to tell me how to behave.

You are an incredibly rude and ignorant man.
Try reading the Bible if you don't think it too is based on hate.
The vast majority of Christians have never fully read the Bible.

Few mass murders have approached the extent of the illegal invasion of Iraq by the "Coalition of the Willing".

Find out the facts about the history of Democracy in Iran. Yes it was a democracy in the early 1950's.
The CIA orchestrated a coup against the democratically elected government, at the behest of the British. Why? Because the Iranians nationalised the British oil infrastructure after decades of being ripped off by dishonest arrangements that saw the Iranians live in poverty while Britian built an industrial empire on stolen oil. They had to get the US to do it becuase all the Brits had been thrown out for organising a failed coup.

The Brits and French divided the Arab lands between themselves after the First World War despite having assured the local people they were there to overthrow Ottoman domination and bring independence.
'certainly the public image' really covers it dusnit.

maybe if you got to know a few and understood more about islam itself rather that what the red papers say, you might learn to see why some people choose that way of life and stick with it.
come on Ankou, tell us the good points about Islam?
SQAD ///30 yrs ago the UK was not a Muslim country, no mosques and very few mosques. Now, at least 10-20% of the population, depending upon which set of statistics are hurled at you, are Muslim..///

Please can you supply ANY statisitcs that show a 20% Muslim population of the UK. Would doubt that you can find one with 10% of the population (that being around 6 million)

Still, why let facts get in the way of your prejudices?
You can indoctrinate and brainwash any individual given the right circumstances. Just take that rich girl Pattie Hurst whoc converted from being a socialite into an armed robber. Something completely against her character. When released from this armed group she had to be desensitived.

A child brought up in the Muslim tradition will follow the teachings of the Koran. Add this the hated preachings from an imam and they are hooked.
i'm not religious so don't really see the appeal of any "faith", but can see why some people feel the need.

your question would be best answered by someone who follows that faith, and that aint me.
Gromit........you, as a Christian, try moving to Saudi Arabia and setting up a church, or your wife driving a car or asking for Christianity to be taught in their schools, or even cuddling on a beach......get the difference?....jobs, better themselves, adventure?....I agree, but try imposing your religious beliefs on the host Moslem society.
SQAD ///Gromit........you, as a Christian, try moving to Saudi Arabia and setting up a church///

Do you ever bother doing any research into any subject or are your prejudices so large that you just ignore facts.

I am not a christian but agree your example applies in Saudi Arabia. But it does not apply in every other muslim country. I am a frequent visitor to Turkey (a muslim counry) and you can do all of the things you list there. Most of the world is tolerant to each others beliefs, but there are exceptions, unfortunately the Saudis are sat atop of a sea of oil.

For the record, I am no fan of the Saudis.
i have been to saudi with my wife. cuddling your wife on the beach in a resort compund is perfectly tolerated.
having driven on the roads, i would not want my wife driving there. far too dangerous
in international schoools there is no religious education at all, that would suit me to a t
i have no desires to set up a church anywhere in the world, so why would i do it in saudi ?
"The Vatican is in negotiations with Saudi Arabia to open the first Catholic church in the kingdom."

In "negotiations" oneeye......I will believe the presence of a Catholic Church when I see it.

Ankou...."resort compound" is something quite different. In a "resort compound" they give Western priviliges" to kep you in S.A for what you can offer.

Try cuddling OUTSIDE the compound...........!!

International schools are TOLERATED in the "compounds, but not in the Saudi community.
My point about setting up a church was a general comment, not to you in particular.
SQAD - if you were a 30 year old Spanish male, you could be legally married to a 14 year old girl. You could have a sexual relationship with her. That would not be tolerated in this country. Does that mean that our country is wrong? Or does it mean that we simply have different laws - and when you visit another country, you obey their laws. Muslims are (generally speaking) law abiding citizens, just as the majority of people are.

I am still waiting for your confirmation of the percentage of Muslims in this country - or an apology for needless exaggeration.
