I'm confused here, I thought it was standard practice for Catholic clergy to be at least "mildly cheerful", given their propensity for altar boys etc so I'm wondering why the Pope is so against gays. Is it not also the ridiculous celebacy rules that ecourage deviants generally?

I appreciate what you said about the pope being in the Hitler Jugend. True. But we need to also appreciate the times. The German Scouting Association was disbanded by Hitler and boys were forced under peer pressure, bullying at school etc. to join the Hitler Youth. The same goes for the female equivalent the Bundes Deutche Madchen (BDM) who would have been Girl Guides before.

Hitler forced 18,000 Hitler Youth boys, literally kids given a gun and a badly fitting uniform, to fight in Russia, against battle hardened men. At the battle of Kharkov (I think) a third of them were killed. They suffered terrible casualties. If they tried to run back to their lines they were shot for desertion.

The fact that he was in the Hiltler Youth movement and then the Nazi Party, also adds to the probability that those subjects will be mentioned in a thread about the Pope.
