Some people are idiots!!!
OK, here's the thing, i ride a nifty fifty, i don't p!ss about on the roads because i respect the rules and since my accident i have been alot more cautious. But, some people insist on trying to ram me off the road by overtaking stupidly close on corners when there is a car coming the other way, cant these people just accept that i am a commuter and i respect every other driver on the road, Yes, i may be very slow and i couldn't give a flying fluff if somebody overtakes because they need to be somewhere but can they not just have a bit of patience and wait until it is safe to do so instead of putting mine and their own life at risk. I have a right to be on the road making my own way to college or work, people cant quite grasp this concept it seems! OK, moan over. :-)

mdoo98 gives a good answer, own your patch of the road !
I am a biker, drivers do respect bikers more than scooters, but you should ride in the middle of your lane, in other words, own it, if you ride at the kerbside car drivers will try to overtake dangerously, if they overtake when there is oncoming traffic they will hit it, not your problem!

As a driver, I agree with the advice you have been given. If you drive close into the kerb, and are travelling more slowly than the car traffic, drivers will always be tempted to overtake and risk misjudging the amount of room they need to do so safely.
It is better by far for you to take up your space on the road, staking your claim, so they have to pass you only when the other side of the road is clear.

Thanks for ll your answers, i do tend to ride in the middle of my lane and only move a bit closer to the left side when a car is climbing up my backside, and to answer your question zacmaster, it is a 50cc moped but it is a 4 stroke so sounds somewhat respectable compared to the rubbish 2 stroke hire bike i have had for the last 2 months! My bike has a distinct rumble to it which makes the ground vibrate, Strangely, i quite like the sound it makes. :-) I shall take all your advice and continue to stand my ground. Oh and davethedog, when i say 'cautious' i mean that i am alot more aware of things around me, I am constantly looking in my mirrors (not literally obviously, i do keep an eye on the road in front of me lol), baically, i just take alot more care on the road than i used to, since i now know how much hassle an insurance claim is when i fall off or get knocked off!!! I hope i never have to go through that again! :-)
Wow, you are the first biker i have met that respects Nifty Fifty riders, both my parents ride bikes (dad - VTR 1000 and Mum - ER 5) and i shouldn't think either of them would wait patiently for a 50cc rider such as me. lol. I can't wait until i turn 17 in august so i can get my bike licence! McTropicana, i wish there were more people like you who actually give a Sh*t about other road users. :-)
