Do you think that the real aim of Willie Walsh in this dispute is to do the equivalent of a Maggie Thatcher - and
break the union ?

I suspect so

They are hoping to merge with Iberia, which will almost certainly mean a lot of duplication of jobs and functions. If they can just get those pesky workers out of the way first, it'll be much easier to get the merger through.
Shortly British Airways will cease to be British when it merges with Iberia the Spanish National Airline.

When the two Airlines combines, there will duplication in many areas and tens of thousands of jobs will go.

This is more easily achieved with a broken Union.

To date BA has done nothing to avert the strike, and seems happy to absorb the short term losses the strike will inevitably bring. because, in the long term, they will save more money by getting rid of staff more cheaply with a weakened Unite.

Ole!

The Iberia board met on Thursday and the final approval for the merger was expected to be announced. Since then, silence. Maybe the know an announcement now would give the game away.
Surprise surprise!

Iberia/BA have bottled out of making the merger announcement - until later. i wonder why/

// BA is edging closer to signing its merger deal with Spain's Iberia. The Madrid carrier held a board meeting yesterday, but there was no word on the BA tie-up.

However, a spokesman said he still expects a merger announcement by the end of this month. //

Undoubtedly!
It doesn't need Walsh . Just leave it to to Unite they will destroy themselves. Unfortunately they will destroy yet another bit of our economy. We have seen it all before: the car industry, the coal industry, ship building ,the docks, all largely driven abroad leaving us with a few small plants assembling parts produced abroad.

Steve Since when has Japan and the continent been low wage economies, they have a higher standard of living than we do, ? Yet that is where Cars, TVs, W. Machines , Freezers etc. are designed and produced. Look at any of those items in your own home and see where most of them are made, not just assembled , designed and made ? That computer you are looking at , is it a British company ? British Leyland was the last major British car company and what happened to it ? Destroyed by militant unionists. Sending kids up chimneys is that the best you can come up with ? A sure sign you haven't the answer. My family fought for the labour movement but we were not blind to its failings.
zeuhl Our docks, which had been a centre for world trade, with the exception of Felixstowe which was a private container port , lost most of the container traffic to Rotterdam, because our dockers refused to handle containers. It has taken 30 years to build up places like Liverpool. London never recovered.
modeller most of the stuff you mention is made in china.
Cheap Labour Fuelling Growth

China's high-quality but relatively cheap labor force will allow the country's economy to maintain its rapid growth in the coming decade, an industry expert predicted yesterday.

China's economic scale is expected to increase threefold by the end of 2020, as the advantages brought by the country's labor force continue to build, said Lu Zheng, director of the Institute of Industrial Economics under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Lu made the remarks yesterday at the Forum of the Fourth Shanghai International Industry Fair held by the Shanghai Economic Commission.

Economic experts from the United States and Japan also joined the forum to discuss the prospects of the Chinese economy.

According to statistics from the academy, there are at least 2.5 million college students, more than 60 percent of whom are studying science and technology. These well-educated youths are expected to enter the country's labor market incrementally in the coming years.

Meanwhile the average labor costs of industries in China are only 5 percent of those in developed countries like the United States, Japan and Germany, said the statistics.

"No other country can provide such a huge number of cheap educated laborers," noted Lu.
Dr filth " Most of the stuff made in China " Toyota , Nissan, BMW, Honda, Fiat, Zannussi, Hotpoint , Hoover, Epson, Sanjo, Panasonic, Citroen. Ikea, . Not many Chinese products there.
Our population has increased and car ownership has gone up 4 times since the 1970s but our production level is still below its 1970 level and what production there is, is in foreign companies, who got rid of our antquated trade union practices.
What happened to our ship building industry? Did that go to low wage China ? No our ocean liners are made in high wage Germany.
In my work I deal with other parts of BA, and they are appalling. Their staff have a dreadful attitude to customers. It is no surprise that when there are problems such as bad weather at Heathrow, BA have big baggage troubles while the other airlines just work it out and carry on.

It is like trying Leyland in the 70's. The Union are too srong and in the past the management have been too weak.

The A380 is not supplied with wings solely from Broughton. Some come from Filton and other components like leading edges from sub-contracters such as Saab. Each wing set comprises 32,000 parts, with additional assemblies from Belairbus (leading edge), Airbus Germany (flaps), and Airbus France (spoilers/ailerons) being added as part of the huge undertaking in Toulouse.

The west factory in Broughton houses the main assembly jigs. Here, the A380 Wing components and sub-assemblies are loaded and assembled into a wing box. Fuel, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems and wiring are installed and tested. The wings are then loaded one by one on a barge for the short journey down the river to Mostyn for transfer to the Ro-Ro vessel.
