Catalunya votes to abolish bullfighting by 2012. Driven by a desire to end cruelty, they say. A political move to thumb their noses at the rest of Spain, say their critics.

So, Bullfighting: an outdated anachronism that a modern democracy would be well rid of? Or a cultural tradition that needs preserving?

There's a post on this subject in CB.............the response was somewhat mixed.
Catalunya has come to a democratic decision and I don't think I'm bothered one way or another. I've been to various regions of Spain over the past 30 years and have never had the urge to see a bullfight.
Tell you what if they ban it I'll throw a donkey off a church roof!
lol geezer.......pmsl
That was an awful way to entertain yourself, R1G - I am very fond of donkeys, much less so of bulls, but that to me was a particularly pointless ritual.
It is a cruel and barbaric sport which sees an innocent animal literally tortured to death. The younger generations of Spain are vehemently opposed to it, let me tell you.

'Tis only the older generations that seek to preserve this "culture".
Bring back dwarf throwing................
'Bout time they sorted out the "land grab" too... but that's a whole other subject.

I had an argument with a guy in Pla De Corrals re the whole bullfighting "culture".
The majority of the locals declined to comment.
..and witch dunking... (no perhaps not)
It's a pity that the younger people here don't think the same way about fox hunting.
^ Hi Nom x

I said this earlier in another thread about younger generations ..
I just know about Valencia .. An old gf (a Spanish national) there hated everything it (bullfighting) stood for.
Older generations .. including local parliament are seeking to keep alive. Long-term, they will not succeed.
I don't know how many people here have actually seen a live bullfight, but I made a concerted effort to see one in Barcelona simply because I felt I'd be more qualified to make a judgement if I'd seen it for myself. What can I say? A spectacularly colourful pageant, wonderful music - but so Incredibly cruel I was reduced to floods of tears. Never again!!

Having said that, for the same reason I also went to a bullfight in Portugal where they do not kill the bull. No, they don't kill it - but they torture the poor beast mercilessly. I hope it's banned across the world.
that's a bit risky boxtops.....
that's what I thought craft, I retract that suggestion!
Hi Albags.. x

I used to walk past the bullring in Valencia (just outside the train station) and there'd be ticket touts trying to entice you in. I never saw anyone accept an invitation in all the times I walked past. A lot of the old bullrings are desserted now. The one in Xátiva played host to Elton John not so long ago.
Never been to one and never would. Then again I didnt take the kids to the circus when animals were involved and only took them to Edinburgh Zoo once and it was barbaric-they werent maltreated (the kids were tho) but see a majestic Giraffe confined broke my heart plus it was mingingly stinking.
Im not an animal activist -i tolerate them just cant stand any form of cruelty for 'pleasure'
Hear hear Dris - bull fighting is disgusting
box tops, I presume that you are not familiar with the other Spanish tradition involing churches then!
Pretend im boxtops -enlighten please....
