If dog poo is black because it's got blood in it it would be black all the way through wouldn't it? This morning my friend's dog did a poo that was dark brown, not black, on the outside but lighter inside. It was perfectly normal in ever other way - no foul smell, normal texture etc. Another friend said this meant it had digested blood in it but I think it would be black all the way through and appear different if it did. I'm sure the friend is wrong, am I right to think this?

most dog poo is brown, the colour varies all the way through according to what it's been eating, same with cat poo (and human poo) - we can do black poo if we've been eating food like spinach. Dried blood is very dark but I don't know that it would go straight through. What makes her think that?

No reason I don't think. She's just heard dried blood makes poo dark. It would be more obvious than darker brown round the edge though surely? It looked normal to me.

Do you think she should be worried or would it be obvious if there was blood and something wrong?
I think that it would probably be more obvious if there was blood present, but I'm not a vet - she should have the dog seen by a vet if worried.
our dog poos all sorts of colours it depends on what she has found in the garden that she can eat , raspberries make her poo dark
What would be worrying would be if it had bright red blood on it or in it. A very small amount is nothing to worry about if the dog has strained to go, but any more than a few smatterings should be referred to a vet. The colour of the poo is more to do with what it has eaten. Liver often makes the poo darker.
I see an awful lot of very dark dog poo in the park........surely they are not all due to blood? No...it's what the dog eats. Some of the quality moist foods produce very pale poos..it's all to do with what's in them.
