I think it's to do with the way Labour elect their leaders. If it had been up to MPs alone then banana man would have been a shoo-in, as they want to hold on to their seats. However the Trade Unions have 30% plus of the say, so Ed's efforts in that direction have certainly paid off. Whether or not he appeals to to the floating voter, like Tony Blair, remains to be seen.
