Millions paid to foreign workers

Hundreds of thousands of East Europeans working in Britain are being paid millions in child benefit for families who don't even live here.

In Poland alone, there are an estimated 40,000 children who receive UK child benefit.

The revelation comes as up to three million UK households start losing out on vital payments because of ConDem cuts.

Workers from the European Union pocket the state handouts as EU laws mean people can claim child benefit from the country where they work or from their own government.

So, a Pole with one child back home can receive weekly child benefit from the UK of £20.30 - instead of the allowance in Warsaw that works out at just £3.36.

Employees from eight ex-Eastern Bloc nations - such as Lithuania and Hungary - are cashing in because benefits It beggars in their countries are so low.

CB was brought in to help the most vulnerable in Britain, the low wage earners, like most benefits it being abused and should be overhauled, we simply can not afford to send this money overseas

When we do the customs take all the cigs from us, maybe the customs at the port don't think European

I would agree with that point helen but there should be a timescale of how long you have being paying tax, not an automatic CB payment, I find it very odd that I am in the minority on this

a couple of years ago I was in Poland and was asked to bring cigs back for someone , I did and had all but 200 confiscated

Many years ago I used to work at the head office of the Family Allowance dept (as child benefit was then known). The rate then was (converted to decimal) nothing for the first child, 40p per week for the second and 50p for the third and each subsequent child.
