Why is it when a woman turns up for court for putting a cat in a bin the world's media (it was on the news here in NZ) are outside the court en mass but when someone appears in court for cruelty to a child there is nowhere near the interest?

What a strange world we live in.

It's because the video of her doing it was posted on YouTube and went viral.
Presumably if a child cruelty video was posted on YouTube, there would be at least as much interest.
I wouldn't bet on it, rojash. The British like pets. They don't like children.
I rather like children, although sometimes it's difficult to eat a whole one,and unless frozen immediately, they have a tendency to go tough.
rojash is right, it's because it's been well publicised. You get the same baying mob for child cruelty if it's a famous enough case.

jno - boringly predictable.
mike11111, the other advantage of children is that you don't have to peel them
ludwig, sorry to be boring but that begs the question of exactly why it's been well publicised. A video of a woman smacking achild wouldn't go viral in this fashion, at least not in Britain.
Most foreign visitors to UK believe that supermarkets are special places where parents take their children to beat them.
Animals don't have a voice . Ask nothing from us . Pets give us a lots of affection. They are like 2 year old children throughout their lives . Quite simply they trust us and when that trust is betrayed they need our protection . That cat offered affection and was then treated badly .
That woman gave no thought to what might happen if for instance the bin men had arrived before the owners.

Do you really believe that . What would happen if she had been caught dropping a child in a wheelie bin ? The media would have gone mad and she would now be in custody.
Modelle,r whilst I agree with your initial papragraph, i can't on the second one. Jno's tongue was firmly in their cheek when they said that.
You may be right BOO but jno's second post seem to back up the first.
What the woman did was bizarre and pointless. It was an act that had a potentially nasty end for the cat. It was a spur of the moment act that impacted greatly on her life - as well as scaring the poor, innocent cat.

But the outpouring of anger and disgust directed towards the woman after the act is another sad reflection on our society. She received death threats - what sort of numptie sent that?

My best friends are cats - and they can be vocal and annoying. But they are still my best friends - I love them to bits and they tolerate me because I feed them.

;-)
