Well, I have a lot of confidence in the Government, so I didn't want to give the wrong impression there. As far as I am concerned they are doing all the right things - they have no option but to cut down and I think we all have to put up with less. But I really don't think they need someone like this making those near the bottom of the pile feel resentful. (Not me I am happy to say but I do know what it is like to be there)

an employee of mine has just come off a fixed rate mortgage and is now better off to the tune of £180.00 per month..so technically he is right...but as for people ''never having it so good'' he ought to get out of his ivory tower and get into the real world and open his eyes...

I hate to agree with him but I think a big proportion of people who have mortgages are indeed better off since the financial crises began and I’m probably one of them – if you happen to have a tracking mortgage, no savings and a job then you will probably have found you have more disposable income due to reduced mortgage repayments. This has meant I have been able to spend more in the shops and maybe this is the plan – to encourage us to buy our way out of recession? Which if it works is good for everyone… though I apologise for sounding like a tory boy?

I’ve never had it so good – but as I work for the public sector and might lose my job this could soon change I guess!

It was definitely a politicians statement. The standard of living for the majority has been improving during every Government, no matter what colour, since WWII.

What he does not say, is the the minority who are worse off has risen since the recession. Jan 2008 unemployment 5.1%, now 7.7%, so there has been increase in the number who are worse off.

Just heard a radio interview in which seemingly informed people agreed with the accuracy of his comments but thought them to be politically inept and insensitive. I live in financially secure comfort and confess I've never had it so good. But then I worked all my life, paid my taxes and paid into a pension fund.

I think that Lord Young is, generally right. Maybe he put it in a way that upset the usual suspects but I don't think he needed to resign .Worse things have been happening during the past year for example many MPs are guilty of obtaining money under false pretence and they are still in Parliament.!!!!
