If he is fully innocent (and proven to be), he should very carefully look at all the papers and what they have said over the Xmas period. Anything out of line, then he should go gung-ho for libel - it will be worth more than suing the police for wrongful arrest. Having said that, the Press now employ a cohort of lawyers to avoid these sort of cases, however they still can put their feet in the proverbial libel cowpat.....
