Control the population growth?
34 Answers
Recently there was a person on the TV appealing for the west to send more vaccinations to Africa, which in turn would save hundreds if not thousands of infant mortalities.
The same evening they were highlighting all the food wasted in this country, and the increase in the price of foodstuffs due to certain global climate conditions.
All this got me thinking, If one could;d do something about the fact that some parts of the world have everything when the other half have very little, what would it be?
And please don't anyone say if it hadn't been for the British exploiting the continent of Africa, there would be no problem. They still had the same problems before any white person stepped onto their shores.
Even if we provided some countries with drugs that would prevent so many deaths from tropical diseases etc. this would only increase the worlds population and in turn the problems, providing them with food would also have the same effect.
Do we first need to control the population growth of not only these poorer countries but also the whole of the planet?

The flipside: with a healthy workforce, the ability of developing countries to provide for themselves increases. There are many success stories (saw this on 'Jimmy's Farm' last year, where you have African farmers producing crops for western consumption (at times of year where we cannot produce said items or the costs would be prohibitive). Leaving aside arguments for and against 'food miles', Africa needs a healthy population in order to supply this Market.
The greater the trade with the west, the more African countries earn in exports, the stronger their currency, the stronger their currency, the better their position to trade,
But it all comes down to manpower.

We need to mix education with assistance.
No, it does not seem right that people die early, but htat is coupled with the large famillies. If we go poking our noses in- yet again- we could spoil the balance.
The earth is massively overpopulated with the human species. This is far more of a problem than the perceived global warming, indeed cut the population and global warming (if you bleive the lefty liberals) would dissappear.
Wee need to encourage birth contril at the same time as assisting or all we will achieve is a bigger problem

If our country is anything to go by (and looking at others they seem little different) a population of x people seems unable to supply jobs creating 100% employment; so increasing the population in the hope of greater prosperity doesn't look workable. Those employed creating wealth will always have to generate enough for the rest of the population. Increase the number of people and the problem remains the same with larger figures.
Ultimately the human race needs to have a more responsible attitude to breeding. Realise that both in the supply of folk's needs and the removal of waste, only so large a population is sustainable for a given sized world. And that having more offspring than will cover for the 2 parents eventually shuffling off this mortal coil, is part of the problem, not part of any solution.
However each country needs to comes to this conclusion by itself and find ways to achieve a solution. Ideally each individual should accept their responsibility and act accordingly.

I'm surprised your so expert in the precolonial history of Africa
If you were you'd know about the great civilsations that were there once like Great Zimbabwe and Ethiopia.
It can't all be laid at the door of Europe though, there was a lot of exploitation by Arab nations, the other slave trade up through Egypt and into the Midle East is often forgotten evan if more people recognise the connivance of Africans in that trade.
Even so Africa has developmental problems that we can help
Like huge import barriers hindering them from selling into the EU and US.
And (You'll like this one) immigration policies that see many of their qualified health workers coming and working in the NHS over here.
Population growth is not uniform across Africa Botswana is only 1.23, South Africa 0.53 whereas Liberia is 4.5 Western Sahara 3.72
you can't just generalise across an entire continent.
