Baggage Questions

Ryanair want another £30 to check a bag in the hold. We are only going away for two nights so the bf is happy that he can fit all his stuff into one bag but he doesn't have the copious amounts of hair and beauty products that I couldn't leave the country with so I am trying to work out if I could fit all my stuff in a hand luggage bag. So I have a couple of questions:

1) Are you allowed to take liquids on board or are they still banned? Items like shampoo, moisturisers, etc?
2) As there is a one item per person hand luggage rule, would they notice if I had a handbag too and if they did would they make me check in my hand luggage in the hold?
3) Can anyone recommend a good 'hand luggage' bag?

Strictly one item of cabin baggage per passenger (excluding infants) weighing up to 10kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm is permitted. (handbag, briefcase, laptop, shop purchases, camera etc.) must be carried in your 1 permitted piece of cabin baggage.
All liquids must be in individual containers not greater than 100ml capacity.
All containers must be placed in one transparent re-sealable bag (such as 'ziplock' bags or bags with pressable seals), no larger than 20cm x 20cm (8" x 8") in size and not larger that one litre in capacity. The containers must fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be fastened closed.
Only one transparent re-sealable bag per passenger is allowed. Larger bags or bags that are non-sealable, such as fold-over sandwich bags are not allowed
In answer to number 2 is yes, they would notice handbag too.
You have to shove your handbag inside your larger cabin bag!

I came back from Chicago recently and had overlooked a small bottle of water in my hand luggage. They found it. They always do! It was confiscated and I apologised.

It is the anti - terrorism legislation, whether this is OTT and applied fairly at each airport, is another debate! The air side shops would not have argued mind you!

At least the last 6 times I've flown I've had over 100ml of gin and tonic in a soft drink bottle in my handbag and it hasn't been picked up once. Worrying really.

That's a good point, I've never once had the several lighters taken out of my handbag either.

Well I stuck to the rules at first but got in a panic waiting for ages for the trolley to come round (I hate take-off and any turbulence) so I've ended up risking it. Yes Milly I also had lighters (inadvertently) that have never been found. As long as I don't carry it my shoes I reckon I'll be allright LOL

wear as many of your clothes as you can (there's no limit to how many jumpers you can have on) and see if that frees up room in your bag. I can't honestly imagine how two nights abroad could require check-in luggage - do you really need 100ml of shampoo for two nights?

Would it help if you didn't take your copious amounts with you & bought them after check in ( departure lounge shops) I'm sure it wouldn't cost £30 ( small amounts for 2 nights ) & throw away balance before flight back. A bloke's point of view.Ron.

Buy a "poachers jacket", ie one with umpteen pockets, even Ryan air haven't started going through your pockets. Whatever you buy airside still has to fit in your one bag remember.

Thanks for all the answers. I just gave in and booked the flight with a bag in the hold in the end. My brain got tired trying to work out what 'essentials' I wouldn't actually need, how many pairs of shoes I wouldn't need and how I could wear 17 tops without passing out from heat. :o)

One other thing though... how do they get away with charging £20 admin fee to pay with a visa debit card?? I thought the charges had to be reasonable?

Society - had a couple of money questions recently. If you mean the one about the accountant not sending the pay slips through, I managed to get hold of him and he sent them to me on the Sunday so I could set them up and they appeared in everyones accounts as normal first thing on the Monday.

Having recently flown - yes, one item including handbag, so unless you can stuff your handbag in the hand luggage, you can't take both. If you do, the bag goes in the hold and you will be charged even more for it, and you might be over your luggage allowance.
Five items of less than 100ml in the clear plastic bag. However - if you don't take those things through security, but buy them in the chemist in the departure area after you've been security checked, you can still take them on board. We take mini sizes of shampoo, deodorant etc., which you can buy in Boots or Superdrug, no need to take huge pots. A mini size will easily do you 2 days.
As long as your hand baggage fits in the metal sizing frame at the airport (size as per grasscarp's post) it will go on board ok.
