Well <<this young man>> didn't take enough notice of his father not to do wrong in the first place.
If one was to take a view based on the evidence of just this one case, there appears to be a correlation between parents who assault their children and those whose children commit crime.
I never assaulted my kids and they never committed burglary.
BTW How stupid do you need to be to assault a child in front of the police?

How come you could have come up with this reasoning? This time I do not think that the parents have failed.
It would seem that the Lad had not been in trouble before, so perhaps this short sharp shock treatment from a parent that cared, is exactly what was needed?

As far as you know, who actually knows what their children get up to when away from their parents scrutiny?
Perhaps this is why the guy completely lost it, because he had spent the 13 years of this lad's young life bringing him up to recognise right from wrong, and then for the lad to let not only his parents down but also himself.

The lad is in a police station accused of burglary
His father thinks it appropriate to assault him - in front of the police!
Clearly if this is an example of his parenting skills, he is not getting the best results so far is he?

He can't stay long, his son is helping police with their enquiries and he is due in court this afternoon."

Clearly if this is an example of his parenting skills, he is not getting the best results so far is he?

If you take out the 'technically' from that statement - as you should - then I would still disagree with it.
This lad is already committing adult criminal acts, and is ready to see how society reacts and punishes him. it is clear that his father's habit of 'clipping' him has shown only his father's inability to keep his temper and discipline his child properly and appropriately.
Now the child has seen his own father treated like the criminal he is - and maybe that will be more of a lesson to him than random violence from a short-tempered bully.
My father was fond of 'clipping' me - he kept it up until i was in my twenties (bullies can always establish a hierarchy, age is irrelavent) - until one night I answered back and he came at me with a pair of kicthen scissors. I was merely waiting until he got close enough, so i could get hold of them, and the result would have been a fatality for one of us, had my mother not intervened.
This kind of 'discipline' is not appropriate - it is violent bullying - and it failed this child, as it failed me. My only lesson was never to hit my children in the head or face, or allow them to do the same.
if this lad is going to learn that actions have consequences - a dispassinate legal system may succeed, where his ignorant bullying criminal father with his violent temper has failed.
