Yet another mad-cap idea, does anyone really think that putting cigarettes in plain packets will encourage people to give up smoking?
How will the smokers know what brand he/she is smoking?
All these pointless measures must be costing just as much as the Government gains in taxation.
Why don't they grab the bull by it's horns and make smoking illegal?

I just put mine into a cigarette case instead. If someone wants to stop they will do it themselves. If they stopped selling tobacco that would solve it. Unless of course you know a good contraband smuggler.
I am not a smoker myself but what gets me are the over the top remarks such as joko's, who's avatar says "Don't Panic"
/// ordinary people, being forced to suffer, just so you can enjoy yourself.///
Does she think twice about the much more toxic fumes that her car belts out on her way to the supermarket? Or perhaps the pungent smell of her particular heavy perfume, that gets right up my nose (pardon the pun) in pubs, restaurants and supermarkets etc.
One generally finds that the ones that harp on against other peoples freedom to take part in a perfectly legal pleasure, are the ones that are always ready to fight for non discrimination and human rights.

I don't expect it is supposed to help folk give up at all. It is to remove the last vestiges of glamour to reduce the number of young idiots taking it up.
Smokers will know what brand they are smoking because it will tell them on the pack.
To make it illegal would be to overstep the mark where one doesn't have the State dictate, and would cause a major outcry. And a criminal element would step in to supply. The idea is to help society not control it.

mikmak...fair enough if that is the only place you smoke...but most others arent so considerate.
AOG - of course I am aware of those things - but thats hardly relevant here as this discussion is about smoking, not every single other pollutant in the world....and bringing that up does nothing to strengthen your argument.
and as for panicking - believe me i am not...dont try to negate my words by trying to imply i am hysterical about this.
i am surrounded by smokers all the time and dont complain at them... but i would if they started trying to defend it and make out anyone who doesnt like smoking had 'issues'...
like i said i dont care if you smoke yourselves to death but i do when i have asthma and a chest infection but still have to put up with it in silence, so as not be seen as a 'moaner'
