i have a part of a song going 'round me head and it's driving me mental!
It's a bit like Harper valley PTA, in that it tells a story of something - I think - two young people ..er...at a prom, and is from around the same time.
Any way, they throw something off the _________bridge possible something like, hellatatchi? I think it's the ballad of someone - Billy jo? Billy rae?
It's very annoying as I really only have the tune and the odd word!
help me pleeeeeeease!

thanks everyone - i feel very special! I didn't think anyone would get it from my lame description!
What's it all about then?
tittle-tattle in a li'l old hick town in the southern staes I think
It's about young love and the consequences of unprotected sex in the deep south in the sixties I believe.
what did they throw off the bridge ?
well I always thought - the girl had a baby - what the priest saw them throwing off the bridge - Billy joe couldn't live with the guilt and threw himself off too...

they threw a BABY off the bridge?? Blimey, what a jolly song!
merciasounds, yup.
he's must have very depressed, Billy Jo, after listening to those lyrics ;-(
a baby would float and the culprits would be prosecuted = not a baby.

have read the wiki thing with interest. it seems listeners of the song have read meanings into the lyrics that weren't really there.
i don't particularly care for the song - it just repeats and repeats a rather dull melody IMO. I'm glad I found out about it though. ♥
