It is the distance in kilometers from the start of the motorway. One carriageway has A after the number, and the other has B.
It is used by the Highways Agency and recovery companies to locate particular places on the motorway. As well as the signs you saw, the same information is shown on every 100 yard marker.

Joko, in the cities & big towns be very aware of Red Light cameras, these catch the unaware motorist many times, you may be talking to your passenger or something might have detracted you, you are that close to the lights they are changing & you think SOD IT I'll go through, (3points) been there seen the video, but never been done.
traffic light cameras are the least of your worries. The average speed cameras, that started off on roadworks to protect the one bloke working in an eight mile stretch of conned off contra-flow, are now appearing all over the place.
Nottingham ring road is covered by a camera roughly every half a mile! It would be fine if you could use cruise control but as is the norm people change lanes or crawl along at 10MPH below the limit so they are safe!
Journey that took me twenty minutes now takes closer to forty and the impact on road safety has been ZERO.

i was following my boss in a large van, and he knew it, and he drove through the light when it was on amber and almost on red...i was pretty close behind him as traffic was busy and didnt want to be split up, but by the time i realised i was pretty much through it...
i suppose i assumed hed know i wouldnt make it, as he only would by the skin of his teeth, he'd just stop...and drive as people do when they are in convoy/
i am pretty annoyed at my boss really...he kept doing it, so i just stopped as usual after that...hed whizz through a light then pull up to one side to wait for me, instead of just stopping at the light...then we had to sort of manouvre back into the traffic...idiot
