Not sure where to put this question, so thought I would try on CB.

Would a school allow a child to be taken out of school from, say, January until March to be educated abroad and then return to mainstream school in the UK.

I am asking for a friend. My response was no, because of how precious school places are here in the UK.

I think you could be right. It would depend on the school and how oversubscribed they were. Trouble is, if a pupil is on the school roll, they are expected to attend that school. If that year group is heavily oversubscribed, they may want the child to be taken off the register. Then of course there is a problem with getting back into that school.

I also think there might be issues with the curriculum since I doubt the foreign school will follow the same curriculum.

Ask the Head.
I think it might depend on the circumstances too. I live in an area where there is a huge multinational employer. If you work for them you may be "asked" to work out of the Uk for a length of time and the family relocation package is generous. Local schools are therefore used to pupils going abroad with their parents and returning to the same school. The period of time is usually longer though.

Thank you both for your informative answers. My friend has a business abroad which is seasonal but has recently been given custody of her two grandchildren.
