Rhubarb Infestation.

This year my rhubarb has been almost destroyed by snails and slugs.
I've never noticed it in previous years. I would have thought rhubarb leaves being poisonous would be pretty safe. It's still growing well so it doesn't matter but is it normal on rhubarb ?

I often get loads of snail/slug holes in my rhubarb leaves. It doesn't seem to do it any harm and as I don't want to eat that bit myself I don't worry about it

I think it may be wrong to assume that, what is poisonous or toxic to humans is also toxic to what we regard as pests.
Some insects etc will feed on toxic plants, which they have become immune to, and therefore become toxic to would-be predators.
Hopefully the slugs will just use you'r rhubarb stems as a highway to the leaves

They have completely destroyed some leaves and in the main the stems are OK but there is a little damage.

Maybe you could try scattering some, dried, crushed egg shells around the base of the plants or even spent coffee grounds to deter the slugs and snails, some swear it works. I found it works only after repeat applications
