///And what do these East Europeans , admitted under Labour, do in this country?///
Some of them do the jobs of displaced British workers. Only for money and under conditions that British workers, quite rightly, will no longer tolerate.
I find it amazing that the 'right-on' AB brigade still defend mass immigration, despite the architects of the policy admitting it was a mistake and/or apologising for it.
They probably think it shows them as 'caring' whereas what it really shows is a total lack of empathy for the displaced people who were already at the bottom and, rather oddly, getting poorer under a Labour government.

Well, to everyone except the dye hard right-on brigade, this is known and accepted.
Even though many of us said there would be problems at the time, it was based on gut instinct (not racism as New labour accused us of), therefore I don't think we can blame Straw entirely. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
But, Cameron & Cleggo do have the benefit of the hindsight so what are they doing? that is more the question.

Not sure I follow this. What conditions that they quite rightly wont tolerate? More like easier to sit on benefits than get up and do a job and contribute to society.

They're appologising for it because as we're now in a time of recession (Thanks to DC's chums at the banks!) people are now turning to blame foreigners for 'taking their jobs' which is creating the sort of xenophobia you're exhibiting.
So they're apologising to try to draw flak away on the run up to an election.
You point is actually really stupid
I'm an employer - If I have 3 applicants for a role and the best one is Eastern European or even Indian you want me to give the job to a Brit?
You want me to be less competetive to give British people preference because they just happen to be born in the same country as me?
I suppose you have British cars and washing machines - not a BMW or Bosh to be seen?
I don't suppose you'd be very happy if we applied your logic to purchases
Sorry you cant buy a NEFF appliance it has to be a Hotpoint because of British jobs.
I suspect you'd call that Socialism or Communism

haven't you got plenty of unbiased opinions from the usual suspects on this thread already, Sqad?

And why is this an issue? Because the British public won't pay a penny more for anything than they have to. So they will happily pay for £2 T-shirts from Primark, produced in Bangladesh, rather than more expensive ones made here by those respectably paid British workers.

I point is obviously lost on a genius, like you, jake. ;-D
Replace your 'best' candidate with 'cheapest', for that's what we're talking about. So that's you, your fellow billionaires and the CBI in favour of this race to the bottom where wages are concerned. You think you're revealing some astounding new economic theory? Dear oh dear.

With regards to foreign workers being employed in this country isn't the answer really quite simple, for every job that is available if a British born person who is receiving state benefit refuses it then stop their benefit. Only employ foreigners when all work available is being done by people who are no longer receiving benefit, or is this too complicated for government departments to work out ?

Svejk, every employer employs at the 'going rate' whether they are solicitors employing junior solicitors , a shop employing sales staff, a railway employing guards, or in any other business. That rate will be the lowest rate which candidates will accept. And the balance point is that at which the business remains competitive with its rivals; above that, the public won't buy the goods or services.
Do you want a system of every trade and profession having a fixed wage for each job at every level , with a view to keeping someone not British, who would do the work for less, out?
