The best thing that has happened to the Church for a very long time is the appointment of Justin Welby as Archbishop of Canterbury .

Highly intelligent and blessed with great common sense, he was a very senior director in the international oil industry before deciding to dedicate himself to the church. He has worked his way to the top in one of the hardest industries in the world before becoming leader of the Anglican communion. I have huge respect for his views, no other senior 'churchman' has his depth of knowledge of international politics, finance and industry as well as being an international religious leader.

Eddie, a persuasive case there regarding his credentials. What precisely do you admire about his views and work?

He has already smoothed the way for Women Bishops to be appointed , yet avoided a rift in the church over the issue. He is a highly skilled negotiator who can see both sides of an argument and find a way forward that leaves all sides happy. A 'Politician' in the true sense of the word.
If anyone can find a way to bring Christians, Muslims, other religious groups and the 'non believers' to a greater degree of understanding it is him.

Speaking sense and religious matters are entirely incompatible. All religions are invented and are the irrational belief in illogical circumstances......what possible "sense" is there in that ?

Its difficult to choose agchristie, my views of religions being what they are, but I suppose Buddhism appears to be very peace loving, which does count for a lot I suppose. But even that is full of drivel, as they all are. So that is my best shot but I would admit I am not completely sure of myself here.

Now if you had asked what religion speaks the most drivel, it would have been easy ! My favourite for some time now has been Scientology. It used to be Mormonism ( just love those Magic Underpants and the Golden Tablets, not to leave out how the Lost Tribe of Israel got across the Atlantic in ancient times ! ) but its hard to better anything to do with aliens isn't it ?

agchristie...in all the years I have been here on AB, there has never been anybody to defend Scientology...not enough Americans on AB I suppose....what a pity !
