/// and certainly not a deterrent. ///
Really??? At least that particular killer won't kill again. //
Obviously not - but if the notion of Capital Punishment is to deter others, my point is that it patently does not work, as I have pointed out numerous times each time the subject is debated.

SparklyKid - // Nothing wrong with revenge, ask her distraught parents. It is certainly a deterrent, ie, they will not stab anyone to death again. //
I would not presume to speak for the victim's parents, but if there is revenge to be had from this dreadful business, that is theirs and theirs only.
But as a society, the rest of us are diminished by simple revenge, which solves nothing for society as a whole.
// A better idea, a year or two in a young offenders institution, released back into their gang culture with advanced status. //
That's not a better idea at all.

Ludwig - // // That makes it revenge, not punishment, //
// How so? I'd say hanging is a pretty severe punishment. //
It's not a punishment - punishing someone for a crime is designed to stop them repeating the crime - somewhat redundant if they are dead anyway.
// Why don't you classify being locked up in prison as revenge? //
Because that actually is a punishment!
// I'm personally not in favour of capital punishment. I just find all the hand wringing over it a bit odd. //
'Hand wringing' infers that someone is agonising over something, unsure what to do - I assure you I am not hand wringing.

//Perhaps it was because it wasn't committed in London?//
In the wider discussion around taking knife crime seriously, and the powers that be showing more initiative and enterprising solutions, one of the considerations had to be where knife crime is occurring.
Whilst,London has a very serious problem this should not exclude the growing alarm elsewhere in our town and cities.
A death is a death and geography should serve as an indicator that the capital does not have this problem exclusively.

SparklyKid - // The death penalty is not revenge, it is , or should be, a totally appropriate punishment. //
There is a clear distinction between revenge and punishment.
Revenge is a response designed to make the victim, or their relatives and friends, feel that they have paid back in some way for what was done to them. It is an emotional response designed to make the perpetrator feel the same, or worse, as the victim.
Punishment is an action designed to deter the offender from committing the offence again - the notion is that learning what happened the first time will prevent a second time.
On that basis, Capital Punishment is a misnomer, you cannot punish someone by preventing them from learning the leson of their punishment.
