Planting Bulbs

Yes, I know it's the wrong season to plant out spring flowering bulbs, but I have a nice roomy space in our newly refurbished "rockery" and would like to put Snakeshead Fritillary and Lily of the valley in the space, for spring flowering. Best time to plant the bulbs? August? September? So that I can make a note to myself to purchase the bulbs in good time .... cheers, Chox.

I'd say the best time to plant bulbs for spring is November, but you can plant them anytime, including now i think.

Many thanks for your help, folks. Yes, I thought so .... the reason for not planting them now, I understand, is because they should be flowering now (Lily of the Valley in April I believe), so they needed to be planted in November. So will nudge myself in the autumn to plan in Nov. Many thanks folks, much appreciated. Cheers, Chox.

You can buy Snakeshead Fritillary as flowering plants for planting out, chokkie. Otherwise plant the bulbs between September and November.
Same with Lily of the Valley. Get yourself down to your local garden centre

I've just planted some bulbs which I forgot about. Wee word of warning about Lily of the Valley - it spreads like wildfire - personally wouldn't put in a rockery.

Ah OK i understand you, yep. Correct thinking.

Agree with Maggiebee. I put a small piece of lily of the valley root in the garden and it went mad, taking over the border and coming up in the grass. It needs to be enclosed, like mint, roots travel underground.
