Condolences? I Don't Think So!

A body fell from the wheel well of an aircraft and landed in a garden in Clapham, London, yesterday afternoon. It missed the occupant, who was sunbathing, by a metre. A spokesman for the airline (Kenya Airways) said "It is unfortunate that a person has lost his life by stowing aboard one of our aircraft and we express our condolences.".

Here's my alternative:

"We're absolutely appalled that the inadequate level of security at Nairobi airport allowed this to happen. The stowaway could have caused damage to the aircraft which could have brought it down, endangering the lives of those aboard as well as people on the ground. We're thankful that nobody was injured either on our aircraft or on the ground and hope this serves as a lesson to anybody foolish and inconsiderate enough to try such a stunt in the future."

That is how it is, Peter.

I was absolutely appalled when I read this (needless to say I didn't see it on the main news which, IMHO, it should have been). I don't care one jot about the dead man. His stupidity (which will no doubt be portrayed as "desperation") could have had tragic consequences for others. Quite whether the occupant of the garden will get over the trauma any time soon is also doubtful.

One can take on board that there has been a significant security breach and that it ought to be addressed strongly without the need to not feel sorrow that someone has lost their life. The two are not mutually exclusive you know.
