I have to say, of all the birds that pay me a visit to my garden are jays.
Today a group of three came in and appeared to be eating something on the grass areas (not worms)though and too early for ants.
Only one seemed to have the blue wing flash's.

Sounds like a family group. Could they have been picking up dropped food from feeders?
Question Author
I don't think they were picking up fallen food from the feeders Roo, as they was well away from the feeding station.
Either small seeds or insects, I recon.
They love acorns, don’t suppose you have an oak tree!?
PS there are at least a dozen in my local woods at the mo.
One sat in a low tree yesterday and I got within ten feet...beautiful.
Collecting acorns they buried earlier,
they bury hundreds and retrieve them in bad weather.
We have a breeding pair in trees near my flat. I see them from above parents and fledglings flitting between different trees.

Oak is the dominant tree in the large expanse of ancient woodland, adjacent to my garden but I'm sure it wasn't acorns they were after, as its too early for them as yet. I've also ruled out acorns that they had earlier buried, as I was near enough to see if it was them but far enough away to see anything smaller that they was foraging for.
Perhaps I'll never know but it was interesting to watch them for a few minutes and I do apreciate your suggestions. Thanks.
