I think it is completely out of order for 'older' members of the AB to castigate a new member for frequent posts, advising her to 'get an idea of how the site works'.

How the site works is - it's a democracy, anyone can post anything they want, about anything they want, as often as they want, within Site Rules.

Anyone who is not interested is free to ignore any threads - they do not have carte blanche to dictate how anyone posts at any time, and that goes double for new AB'ers who could easily be put of by such arrogant and uncalled for responses.

I really hope the latest new member is not put off by the utterly unwarranted hostility she has received, and she will understand that such behaviour does not reflect to attitudes or responses of the majority of people on here.

Those involved are keen to point out the youth of the new member - in which case they should be old enough to have learned some tolerance and some manners, and maturity to exercise both on a site like this, which is free for everyone, and not their personal kingdon.

I'm not convinced that those more tolerant of our new younger members are the minority. There seems to be a lot of aging vitriol on AB.

I do hope not.

Any site needs fresh input, and especially from a younger demographic, I hope the crusty old codgers who think this is their private members club can reign themselves in - that would make a nice change.

I am under no illusion regarding the freedom of new members to use this site, God knows we need some fresh blood as AH says. With that freedom comes a little self control to not post banal 'what's your favourite colour' type questions born out of self confessed boredom.

I'd like to think that any new member is welcomed politely and answered (or ignored) without unpleasantness.

Once they see the way AB is used and the huge variety of people to chat with then they can decide whether the site is for them or not.

What about the 'self control' to simply ignore threads that are not to your taste - and the 'self control' to keep nasty comments on threads you don't like to yourself?

So would I - but in Emily's case, some have decided that is not the way they wish to proceed.

The problem is the increasing number of ABers who use this site as a form of social media rather than as its actual purpose as a Q&A portal. The GMEB thread is a case in point...

I'd be happier if I didn't feel that the site was being used for some sort of "demonstrate your use of social media for research" assignment by several students.

I haven't replied to any of the relevant threads (and won't unless they are actually offensive in some way) - as AH says I have the option of ignoring them without making hostile comments - but the cluttering of the Latest Posts ticker can get a bit irksome.

Politeness cuts two ways and swamping a site which you have only joined a few hours earlier is not good manners.

I would agree - but that is down to the proliferation of social media sites, and the vast numbers of people who use them - neither of which were in existence with this site started.

As to whether or not it's a 'problem' - speaking personally, it's not a problem for me - just for some on here who seem to think they can dictate form and direction - which obviously they cannot.
