/Government launches review into net zero plan
The government has launched a review into its plan to reach net zero by 2050.
The inquiry will be led by Tory MP Chris Skidmore, noted for his support of environmental matters.
The government says it still remains committed to reaching net zero carbon by 2050.
Last week, the government announced it would start allowing shale gas extraction - fracking - to go ahead.
But Mr Skidmore, speaking to the FT, warned investors that the industry was a "non-starter".
He said people would be better off giving their money to renewable energy projects rather than going to fracking and being left with "stranded assets".
Mr Skidmore added that comments by a former boss of fracking company Cuadrilla sounded a "death blow" for the industry.
The Cuadrilla founder said there was no chance of fracking taking off in the UK in the short term because of geological challenges.
Energy secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg gave his full-throated support to fracking in the Commons last week, saying it would be good for energy independence./

Who exactly is running the Tory party and deciding on policy atm? It’s like watching ants running around on a path as the boiling hot kettle is being summoned!

If investors aren't interested, then that's their option. But they will now have the opportunity; which is only there because of the temporary problems the war has created. It's up to the individuals whether they calculate there is an overall benefit to getting involved.

I’d say the Quadrilla boss has put the mockers on any sort of investment with his opinion.
Has there actually been justification for JRMs existence in government in any capacity in the last 2 years, bar being in competition with Dorries for the spot of Number 1 Boris Uber-fan?
//there was no chance of fracking taking off in the UK in the short term//

That's probably correct - but what about the longer term?
A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.

Of course JRM supports fracking. Wonder what his take would be were there plans to do a bit of drilling round the corner from his gaff?
Scottish Govt have announced that there will be no fracking in Scotland
I doubt anyone (except party members) wants to "save the Tories". It's just that the other options are worse.

Worse how, exactly?

In comparison to the present bunch who are imploding the economy as we speak?

Do tell!?
i have posted this link on several fracking threads but it does bear repeating... fracking is unlikely to help with the energy crisis because best estimates suggest the UK has enough shale gase to meet less than ten years of energy consumption... and such gas as there is is very deep and expensive to extract... even producing it at all will take years and the benefits will be short lived...

as far as i can see nobody has produced more authoritative research on the subject…

some fracking companies claim that 50 year deposits are available but they would say that wouldn't they!
The US fracking operators have all gone bankrupt and output is next to nil. It isn’t viable because it is too expensive to extract, and is low grade.
