But in saying that many pubs had been closing even before covid, due to the high cost of drinking out. Even taking into consideration increased overheads for these pubs, breweries/ owners refused to take a lower profit margin to keep up and running, instead prolonged increases until the product was no longer value for money, or even affordable. The public will only put up with so much.
Many more businesses are struggling to recover their profit margins before covid, and many will go to the wall if they don't, or refuse to choose a business plan to recover. That plan must be one of a lesser expectation of profits enjoyed 2/3 years ago.
If you look back many years, all the big named supermarkets, even M&S and many more started of by, piling it high and selling it cheap. The volume of sales made up for the lower profit margin.
If you take a look at the likes of Aldi & Lidl they have gone back to this very system to a degree, and are being very successful. Unless other businesses follow in their footsteps then they will sink I'm afraid. Take less, and live another day, a better day to come if you are prepared to lower your sights now.

I agree, but breweries have been doing this well before COVID.
As for the pile it high sell it cheap, whilst that model may be fine at the moment the fickle public will soon want their wide choice back again once things flatten out, something Aldi and Lidl do not offer. It's not too easy for the retail trade at the moment no matter what market you are aiming at.

And when things flatten out, the ones that act now, will still be in business, to reap the rewards. I shop at Aldi and lidl, and thousands more have turned to them also. Aldi have plans for many many new outlets in the coming year, that's not the case for others, they are closing them because they wont bend their profit margin. I also get nearly all I require from both. Its no good pubs having happy hours at 5 pm? and thats all I know they have tried.
Those for sale in Scotland might though, maggiebee.
