If only the car thief had waited for the police. He pulled his gun and shot first and lost. Simple self defence by the real victim here.

But it 's not justice as we understand the term.

It's vigilante 'justice' with no due legal process, including the fundamental of establishing that the couple were the original vehicle thieves.

So the thief was also a potential murderer. Good riddance. Shame the victim will be billed for the medical treatment he will need now, as the robber shot him first.

If the car owner had not taken the law into his own hands, he would not have been shot, and he will not have a death on his conscience.

The thief was first to fire and was shot as a result. He
took his chances and lost. I don’t see a problem with that.

It would haunt me daily until I died.

That would be your problem. Thieves cause untold misery to their victims. I’ve no sympathy whatsoever.

It's caused by apparent greater respect for the life of someone else, and my own personal morality and sensitivity.

We are all different, but on balance. I'm sure we would each prefer to be ourselves, rather than each other.

Nothing unusual out there.

Example 1. Clearwater Bay, guy phones in to say 3 black guys in his next-door neighbours house, the neighbour away. 'Don't do anything, we'll be there.' The guys go to leave, so the neigbour takes his rifle, shoots them, two dead one injured. Was he prosecuted - no.....'I was defending my neighbour's house as he asked me to keep an eye on it.' Even if the neighbour hadn't asked him, who wouldn't have said 'Yes, I did ask him'. Conclusion - Texan man's house his castle.'

Example 2. Houston's Westheimer - Road rage, two cars at a red light, car 2 winds his window down to go into a rage. Car 1, a luxury Mercedes driver, lifts for the pistol in his passenger compartment and fires it, plugging the driver of Car 1. When asked for the circumstances by th police, response, 'I felt threatened by Car 1 driver - and I'm a lawyer.' End of matter...... Conclusion - shoot first, ask later......

People can say what they would do in certain circumstances but you don't really know until it happens. We might surprise ourselves.
