//Keir Starmer has revealed that he will refuse to work around the clock should his party win Thursday’s election. Speaking to Virgin Radio, the Labour leader contrasted himself with the current premier, well known for keeping long work hours.

Starmer, who has two teenage children, said that he ‘will not do a work-related thing after 6pm [on a Friday] pretty well come what may.’ //

Two thoughts spring to mind.  Either he has no idea what the job entails - or he is in for a very rude awakening. Either way his attitude to the job doesn't bode well.

I suppose he thinks he's entitled to some kind of life away from work.

it's because his wife is jewish.

Sunak and the rest of the rabble had a regular Friday night pizz up at No.10 (even during lockdown), that would last till the early hours. They said they were working.
Starmer has clearly stated that he will have some hometime, and will clock out at 6pm on Friday. A very sensible aim. He will still be PM, so he might not always get to do that.

I doubt Friday Night Dinner is re-enacted though. :)

Where did that come from, gromit?

"Starmer, who has two teenage children, said that he ‘will not do a work-related thing after 6pm [on a Friday] pretty well come what may.’"

Let's hope war doesn't break out at five past six then!   😀

Like all politicians he's entitled to some time away from work. Nothing to see here.

Ahhh ... 'a witness' and the squeaky clean Privileges Committee.  Who'd a thunk?  But that aside there's no mention of Sunak.  Thanks untitled.

Indeed, NJ.

I'm a tory but this is a moronic thing to attack by the media. Just because he's off work does not mean he's unnavalilable. Same in my job.

the question should be if he is not doing anthing after 6pm . is he doing the right thing before 6pm ?

Untitled,@ 14.26 ' has already pointed out the reason. Shabbat ,a special Jewish day begins before sunset on a Friday. Keir Starmer's wife is Jewish and their two children are being brought up in the Jewish faith. They will be having a special meal.As long as he is available ,should anything urgent needs attention ,I can't see a problem.

He can make his normal hours whatever he likes as long as he gets the job done. But come something urgent or an emergency we would expect him to drop everything else and get his hands on the wheel.

I quite admire his stance here (it's about the only thing I do admire him for) and see nothing wrong with it at all.

As other people have said, if something needs his urgent attention, I am sure it will get it.

Of course you have to have time off to spend with your family.

That said if he wasn't working after 6 o'clock on the night of BeerGate, what was he doing?

The Friday evening meal in Jewish houses is called The Shabbat Meal.

NJ, "Let's hope war doesn't break out at five past six then!"

Is it likely that no-one would know about an impending war until it happened?

Even if that were the case, it would be covered by the, "pretty well come what may" exception but I'm sure you were well aware of that.

Yeah, but now it's known he is commuting from 6pm they'll deliberately invade at 18:05 !

The Health Minister Maria Caulfied said she works seven days a week, often a twenty-hour day and goes through her Ministerial box when she gets home at ten at night.

Perhaps she needs to get more sleep since she claimed Starmer had said he would be working a four-day week and finishing every day at six pm.
