Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s first female Prime Minister, has this week achieved what the Tories failed so fatally to do with their doomed Rwanda scheme. Thanks to her determination and charm, Italy has become the first European nation to successfully offshore illegal migrants to a non-EU country.

However bogus the claims of migrants, once they’re in the EU it’s virtually impossible to deport them

Under Meloni’s scheme, migrants picked up by Italian naval and coastguard vessels from small boats in the Sicilian Channel will be ferried directly to Albania, 750 miles away. They will not set foot in Italy. It is potentially a game-changer, particularly as voter fury across Europe forces politicians to do something to stop illegal migrants.

The plan is now operative, and on Wednesday the Italian ship Libra docked in the Albanian port of Shengjin to disembark the first migrants destined for what Meloni’s critics compare to Nazi concentration camps. The aim is to fast-track up to 3,000 asylum applicants a month in two purpose-built structures and send most back to their countries of origin.

She probably had less woke opposition, and a healthly disregard of human rights courts.

The smart thing she has done is not to let them set foot on Italian (EU) soil. Where the UK goes wrong is allowing them to land, once they do, they only have to say the three words, 'I claim asylum' and an internationally understood rule says they must be taken in for processing, - and we all know how speedy and efficient that is.

She clearly did not have the level of 5C trobiscitery that we have. As usual Britain shows the way even if we can't do it ourselves.

International rules that make no sense needs either updating or ignoring. Which of those are appropriate depends on the international community.

It is in the international communities' interest not to deliberately try to generate ill feeling between nations. Especially with major ones.

when you say "we" kahndro, who do you mean?  Britain or germany?

in case you hadnt realised, we (UK) are also not in the EU

"Where the UK goes wrong is allowing them to land,..."

Which is what I have been saying since the "small boats" imbroglio began.

You never seem to tire of what you think is your 'gotcha' posts about my domicile. I'll tell you once more: I have many interests in England, I come and go frequently, and pay and have paid a lot of taxes there and on the issue of immigration all these thing are effected. So please stop, you are not as smart as you think you are.

i dont think i've gotcha at all, just wondering as you mentioned a lot about not allowing people into the EU whether your we referred to uk or germany (seeing as uk is NOT in the EU)

bednobs: I don't understand your point; I don't want illegal immigration into any part of Europe. The Italians are making a good start now and many other countries are considering following.

Britain was the first with the plan, but Rwanda was not the best destination and it was blocked anyway by the ECHR- an organisation we should get out of asap.

Doesn't Meloni only allow `refugee` women and children into Italy? All the rest, fighting age men, are stopped.

Question Author

^^ I think that is considered, it's early days yet, only a few have gone, but it will gain momentum.

They ARE going it or gonna do it?
