Don't bother with an excuse, just phone in and say your too ill to come in. If they ask you to be more specific, remind them you're not a doctor so how the hell should you know!
Looking at this from an employer's point of view, luckily for me not many of my staff pull sickies as they are very team orientated and doing so, means that their fellow workers have to work twice as hard to cover the absence of someone who just fancies having the day off.
Do you ever get fed up when it happens to you, or does this not really bother you? I am not trying to lay a guilt trip on you, well only a little one! But you do need to think about the effect it may have on your fellow workers.
Cheers, Sue

I dont see whats wrong with pulling a sickie, after all, your penalty is a day's pay loss. Many people do it, so eventually you will end up covering for someone else at work and yeah you will have to wkr harder on that day, but thing is that England doesnt have enough public holidays, so people have to decide when to take their day off sick.
I always feel guilty about calling in sick whether I'm sick or not (and we get paid for sick days) but we have to specify what is wrong with us for the sick form which goes to personel.
Food poisoning is always a good one, it can last however long you need it too! Or a migraine as well. I always phone in at around 8- 8.30 so that I can say that I'm up and trying to get ready for work but have just realised how awful I feel!

Filthiestfis, I hope that if you ever become an employer you will remember your words! For information it costs a business money to cover sick leave, both in the fact that they have to pay for statutory sick pay from their own pocket, they cannot claim this back from the government. Also it may cost them more money on top of this, in extra pay or overtime to cover the loss of the employee. With 20 days standard holiday pay, plus bank holidays I believe that people get plenty of paid holidays without needing to take any more in sickies.
sue11, I do agree with you. Although I do feel for people who are genuinely sick and are not paid for it. I met a dear gentleman in the chemist the other day. He was clearly in pain with his shoulder and had been off sick for several months, he clearly was anxious to get back to work and was living on a breadline for his family. He was talking about going back even though he had pain just to get some money, so those people who pull sickies A LOT, should spare a thought. Not talking about the odd, once a year ones.
Well said Sue.
As an owner of a small business it comes straight out of our pocket when people do this. We cant afford to subsidise people who pull sickies.
Luckily we have a small team of people none of whom would want to drop the others in it by pulling sickies.
Just book a days holiday - its what its for.

Golden rules for a sickie ( which I don't condone, of course...)
Try to avoid Monday or Friday sickies - far too obvious.
Take two days off - it's less suspicious
Develop mild symptoms the day before and mention how you're off your food/don't feel like going out tonight/seem to be ever so thirsty/can't stop going to the loo
Don't go ANYWHERE near your workplace on the sickie days.
Don't confide your deception to ANYONE - not even your bestest, bestest pal who always swaps their humous and chicken bagel with you for your dried up cheese and pickle sarnie...trust no-one...ever!
Foget the guilt trip - remember if your job was that interesting you wouldn't dream of having a sickie so it's their fault!
