How can I get a job?
2 Answers
Hi, my name is Emily & i'm 14. I've been into cafe's & shops in my home town for weeks now & I just get turned away for my age. I know that you can get a job because plenty of people my age I know have them but I really don't want to do a paper round or babysitting, I want a more permanant job. Does anyone have any good advice that I could please use? It would be very helpful & kind. Thanks.

Many people will now not employ anyone below the age of 16, and in many cases 18. There are rules governing what hours etc that young people can work. What sort of jobs do the people your age do? Could they let you know if there is an opening? Or could you apply to a similar place?
I know you want a 'permanent' job, but what is not permanent about a paper round? My son has had one for a couple of years now - so it's not what I would call temporary!
Anyway, most of the young people round here (15, 16. 17 year olds) either have a paper round, work a couple of mornings for the milkman (very early starts though!) or wait on or work in the kitchens in the local pubs.
Good luck, but don't be too proud to turn down any job, even if it's 'only' a paper round or babysitting - it's all money in the end!

My daughter was in the same position as you. Lots of her friends were also chasing jobs and all were hitting the same cafes, shops, supermarkets etc.
My daughter now has a job at a local garden nursery and loves it.
I don't know where you live and what sort of businesses are near you, but try and think outside the box - don't just think about shops & cafes. Are there any small B&B's near you?
Don't be put off....and good luck!
