My brother took his kids for their regular check up at the dentist, and saw the dental hygienist instead.
She looked in the youngest one's gob, only to gasp in horror and practially boll0ck my bro for feeding her too many sweets and fizzy drinks.
She really talked down to him, as if he was a bit thick.
He isn't thick, in fact he's a headmaster and his wife a teacher. Their have always been a bit stingy when it comes to teeth and as for fizzy drinks, well you'd be hard pushed to find any in their house - except for christmas maybe- and they are only allowed milk with their tea, and no drinks afterwards.
But the hygienist wasn't having any of it and insisted that the teeth were rotten and only sweets could ahve done it.
they got to see a consultant at the hospital today and it turns out that my poor niece has NEVER had any enamel on her back teeth! Apparantly he's seen it a few times, where the enamel just doesn't grow. She's now going in on monday to have them all out.
i am amazed that the dentist has never noticed this, but enraged that the hygienist could be so judgemental!

The same thing happened to my friends boy. His second teeth came through and they were just fine. The dentist said that it could be due to the mother being ill during pregnancy at the time when the teeth were development.

And I would be enraged about the hygienist too. I would damn well make sure she knew the result of the hospital visit!!

A friend of mine had all her teeth out at the age of nineteen This was in the 1960's .Her teeth just crumbled away. No way did we have fizzy drinks and sweet overload in those days .
Same thing.. no enamel .
They have no reason to blame it on sweet stuff and talk down to your brother . Unfortunately these things happen .
Let's just hope they can do some rescue work as dentristy is far more advanced now and that her second teeth come through OK .Poor lass .Hope she will be OK .

A hygienist or a dental therapist should not be carrying out 'dental examinations' as they are currently only able to work under the prescription of a dentist.

Also it is quite inappropriate to discuss what for some may be a very sensitive matter in an unprofessional manner.

However...
Since you have stated that the teeth are to be removed I will be bold enough to assume that hey are carious (what you would refer to as 'rotten').
I assume this (and may be wrong) since enamel hypoplasia is not and indication for tooth removal.

Enamel hypoplasia does however make teeth more susceptible to the actions of cariogenic pathogens, i.e. they will 'rot' more easily.

But...
Whilst dental caries occurs due to many complex biochemical interactions it is simple in that it requires, a tooth, cariogenic bacteria and sugar.
If there was zero sugar in anyones diet they would NEVER suffer dental caries regardless of suseptibility

Presumably despite best intentions there would have been enough sugar in the diet to produce caries. This is not surprising, most western diets contain 'hidden sugars' that many are not aware of and in a susceptoble individual this is sometimes all that is required.

I think firstly the dentist themseleves should have done the exam (unless they had arranged a specific 'hygiene' appointment which is reasonable enough) and should have informed the parents of the risks/increased suseptibilty in a professional way.

You are right to be annoyed with the Hygienist's judgemental attitude and poor customer service. You bro ought to speak to the person in charge of the practice about how this person made him (and children) feel. At my dentists we have one lovely hygienist and one who acts like that horrible Nazi dentist in the film with Dustin Hoffman - Marathon Man? - 'Is it safe?'.....She starts in on you as you walk through the door and loves hurting you. I don't see her any more after speaking to her boss.

This reminds me of the last time I visited the hygienist a few months ago. She replaced a lovely lady who I used to enjoy seeing, but this new woman really does take pleasure in causing as much pain as possible.

Anyway, my two front teeth are chipped and the enamel on the back of them has worn away. She opened my mouth and said 'What have you done to your front teeth?' I told her I hadn't done anything but nothing I said made her believe me. She insisted it had been caused by some sort of trauma to the teeth and that I should have got them seen to when it happened, but I've never had any kind of accident that would cause it and my dentist has never said they're anything to worry about.

She still didn't believe me and carried on mutilating my gums.

I'm due for a clean in April, I'm hoping she'll have moved on by then, grrrr.

Seems a common thing for hygienists to be such HORRIBLE people. Why? Is their job so crap they have to take it out on everyone they see? Dentists aren't like that.

crisgal my 9 year old daughter has the exactly the same problem and her 10 year old brother doesn't - I would have been really cross if the hygienist had been that rude; our dentist says the same as Lofty Lottie. Her teeth will be fine and look ok now : )

I had a similar problem - none of my top front baby teeth had any enamel on the back and I had them removed - I was two years without them (developed a lisp) but my adult teeth are just fine. I take excellent care of my teeth and they are straight and white but the blimmin hygenist still acts as though I don't look after them!

My son saw a dental hygienist and swore he would never go back. He reckoned she was a sadist!!! It seems that these evil dental hygienists are all female :o(

My teeth are far from lovely Sunflower!! However, apart from a few crowns the ones I have left between the gaps are all my own. ;o) !
