Butchers' shops

Further to my q. on Free Range Chickens and answers, is there any such thing as independent butchers' shops selling meat from non-intensive farms where the animals are well treated, not medicated, etc., and how do I go about finding them?

Depending on how much you trust your local butcher, you could just ask them!  They should be able to give you the name of the farm's the meat comes from I hope.  If you don't have a reliable local butcher (and lets face it nowadays very few of us do) you could try ordering some meat online from an organic farm shop.  www.graigfarm.co.uk and www.cambrian.co.uk are both pretty good but be warned as the prices are high compared to that charged by tesco and co for mass-produced birds and it is usually better value to order a large quantity due to postage (I sometimes club together with friends).  A final option is seeking out your local farmers market.  Even if it involves a bit of a journey you can be guaranteed a great day out and lots of goodies to stock your freezer.

Try the Real Meat Company (do a Google search).  There was a branch where I used to live and I do miss it.  You do pay more but it's worth it.
