The official school of thought is that the Three Wise Men arrived at epiphany, which is celebrated on 6 January. This is the day that the Eastern Orthodox Christians exchange gifts on, rather than Christmas day.

 

Of course, Jesus wasn't born on 25 December anyway, he was probably born at lambing time in spring, so the date doesn't really matter much!

 

Some suggest the Wise Men arrived when Jesus was a toddler, at least a year after his birth. Probably because after meeting with the Wise Men,  Herod ordered the slaughter of all boys born in the last two years.

ALIEN BIRTH BABY TO BE CHARGED WITH TREASON

BETHLEHEM -- An unmarried couple from Nazareth were given shelter in a cowshed owned by Brama Teitmann, a notorious slum landlord, and later a baby was born.

 

"There was no water, and the place was filled with straw and animals." commented local public health authorities.

 

"The birth was extremely questionable," said Herod, election candidate for the Anti-Natal Party. "She claims to be a virgin."

 

An insider for the Roman authorities said that the baby is being investigated on charges of treason and political rabble-rousing. "There is a crowd alleging that this baby is not only the son of God," explained Pontius Pilate, "but also that he will radically change religion in the future." He later dashed away to wash his hands.

 

Three Oriental Kings were detained on the outskirts of town by the Roman Border Patrol. "We caught them red-handed with contraband gold, frankincense and myrrh," explained Queepio Outus, an official with Borderland Security. The Kings were promptly arrested and deported to Syria.

 

At 0600hrs local time, as the baby was being born, a bright light, thought to be a U.F.O., was seen over Bethlehem. "This omen-ifies things. Matterfacts are about changify unless we wage warification against Global babyfying!" commented visiting world dictator, G. W. Bushbaby.

The magi (wise men) would have arrived at the place of birth in the hours of darkness since they were trying to evade Herod's elite bodyguards who were following them.

I was taught that the Three Kings arrive many months after Jesus was born, the Bible itself apparently refers to a house and it makes sense because why would Herod kill babies up to two years of age if Jesus was only a baby.

I don't know if anyone saw that brilliant programme over Christmas about who the  Magi actually were, and the origin of  Star of Bethlehem -  but the conclusion was (surprise, surprise) that it did happen.

 

I've also been told the same as ursula and Ember that Jesus was about 2 years old at the time of the Magi's visit.
