Same as railway stations, grandpajoe - captive audience, charge what they like.
I have been saying this for years do not use them !!!! go prepared it will only take a month of nobody using them and the whole edifice will come crumbling down !!!!!
Dont want to rub salt in your wounds but for 11 quid you could've brought yourself this badboy http://www.argos.co.u...%3ETHERMOS+FLASKS.htm

Any filled it with hot choccy so you wouldn't get scammed next time!
It's been the same way at motorway service stations for decades, they have no reason to offer any discounts or reductions as if one person doesn't pay it the next will pay. The petrol prices always are the same, alot higher than your local garage, but again, they know you have to pay it, some of those stations give the companies their biggest margin which they then take profit from to support their buisinesses in town centres.
How much did they charge you to park and get out of the car for a walk around?
How much did they charge you to use the loos?
The running costs on these service stations are astronomical, and they are not allowed to charge for use of toilet facilities. The water rates and toilet paper costs alone are sky high.

You have a point H C but this is outrageous. They have you queueing for ages as well whilst two half wits try to serve. (probably on min wage!!)
Then as we went to re-join the motorway I noticed that juice was at £1.27 per litre!!
Oh and my son bought some "Super glue" to effect an emergency repair SIX QUID
For Funks Sake
I know I paid over 3 euros for a small coffess at Malaga airport. :(
I don't know which motorway service stations Dot is getting her fuel from but they must be different from the ones I use. Many years ago petrol at motorway services used to cost at least 10% more than elsewhere, but most of the ones I use nowadays charge the same price per litre as Asda and Tesco do (which is a great deal cheaper than some of the local garages here in Suffolk, which currently charge over £1.30 per litre).

Motorway service areas have to pay megabucks to the Government for the right to operate the facilities, so it's unsurprising that they pass their costs on to their customers.

We normally come off the motorway and use the local services and then rejoin
as i'm fed up with being a captive audience , and being ripped off .
I don't mind paying if the service and food is good , but it's very rare on the
motorways .
Buenchico, i live in suffolk, the fuel prices round here are about 1.20 now . . .
£1.30!!!!! I've just passed one selling it at 120.9, the texaco on the far side of town, then i passed the texaco this side of town and it was 119.9, then the Total up the road was £119.9 but the shell round the corner was 116.9 so i filled up there and used my lotalty card.

I guess where there are fewer garages and where they are out in the stics they have to charge more as it is further for the tanker to go to fill their site tanks.
Ar Charnock Richard services on the M6 It's usually 5p a litre more than the tesco 2 miles away!
the cheapest round here is 1.18, and the other one is 1.20
They don;t pay minimum wage in the local service station shop either, they pay around £1.50 per hour more for 22+.
They are modern day highwaymen always lurking to jump out on the tired, weak and hungry which is the only reasons that you come to them, best way to avoid them is always travel on a full tank, invest in a cold box always pack food and drink, then there's going to the toilet which cannot be helped.
It depends where you go, Mollykins.

Around Ipswich the price is still generally below £1.20 but even Tesco at Stowmarket (just down the road from Ipswich) is 3p per litre dearer than the Tesco at Copdock Mill, on the edge of Ipswich. Local garages (such as Riddelsdell Brothers in Boxford) are charging over £1.30 per litre.
Tesco's fuel is 118.9 down here at the moment, which sounds pretty good!
As for the toilet issue - there's nothing to stop you just driving in, using the faciltiies, and driving off - we do that quite a lot, my bladder being what it is.
you're near ipswich? i go to ipswich all the time, sailing and power boating with the cadets, aswell as some parades.
infact you remind me of one of the isntructors, with your personality (from what i can see through your responses to various questions) but the likelyhood is incredibly slim.
Boxtops these places they use diversionary tactics, namely barriers and signs that point to the toilet but end up actually herding you towards the beginning of one of its many queues whose aim is to part you with your hard earned cash!
