Thursday evening I was given a letter advising me I have a disciplinary pending next week but I am ok to stay in work during the time leading up.
Yesterday (friday, 24 hours later exactly) They gave me a letter of suspension with no reason for one week with pay,
Is it illegal for them to say its ok for you to stay in work, then bang a suspension on out of the blue a day later when you was told you wasnt having one?

well it doesn't seem right, if you didn't do anything else wrong, between the letter and the next day.
so you got reason for being suspended ....??

When one of my daughters was in HR,this was a few years back(but not that far).
She informed an employee of a disclipinary on the Friday.
He was still causing trouble in his department on the Monday, and so the scenario went like this:~
Monday 1st Written warning
Tuesday 2nd Writtten warning
Wednesday 3rd Written warning
and out of the door and goodbye.
At that time 24 hours had to pass between stages in the disciplinary/written warning stages.
Normally, verbal warnings have to be given prior to written warnings,BUT if the firm considers you have done something serious enough to require a suspension, then verbal warnings are not necessary.
So it looks as if the law may still be the same,so it also looks as if they are within the law, sorry.
What did you do....................?
I can't see that it's illegal. If they have more information now they might now have good grounds for a suspension. Are you sure no reasons have been given? Was a reason given for the original disciplinary hearing?
no its not illegal to suspend you while a disciplinary procedure is pending even if they have simply changed their mind - you are being paid, but they don't want you in work while they investigate... sounds fair to me
Be polite for you to answer - What grounds have you been told is why you are suspended
