I have just moved into an appartment which overlooks a very busy pub & 2 busy roads. I'm struggling to sleep at night because of the noise! What can i do to make my bedroom window soundproof? I've just brought some pieces of polystyrene home which i've taped togeather & placed in my window just to see if it helps. Anyone any other ideas please? Thanks

You could try earplugs as a tempoary measure. They work for me.

I've tried umpteen pairs Mike but now got one very sore ear!
how long is 'just' I moved into a flat onto a main road from being at my parents quiet house. First few nights I slept in the hall as I couldnt sleep, but after a while I got used to it.
can you sleep to music? maybe put stereo on loud to drown out other noise

A couple of months forgetmenot & no way will i get used to it as it's lots of noises ie:
Pub music/bands, smokers, taxis, cars playing boom, boom music the list goes on!!!!!
You could double glaze. I believe to insulate sound you need a larger gap between the panes than you do to insulate for heat. Try a search on the Internet for detailed info.
If the sound is coming through the wall, it may be a bigger job though. In which case might pay to get a professional in to advise.

I'm only renting OG. Only built in 2002 but thrown up as windows crap!!
If only renting and you really cant get used to it, I'd look at moving somewhere else
In which case secondary glazing may not cost to much, and if you repair any installation damage you may be able to take it when you go. Get landlord's permission first though, or you may be limited in what you can do.

Thanks everyone. Going to bed now(only 3hrs sleep last night!) Let you know how my polystyrene went.
Secondary double-glazing panel might help a lot. Basically a sheet of glass held against frame or wall with a surround/clips.
If the noise from the pub is disturbing you have you tried reporting them to the Environmental Health Department of your local council?
You could try a cooling fan as these make a noise that masks things like you are experiencing. Sounds strange but it worked for someone I knew. I use earplugs myself, they reduce noise by 32 decibels!

Sorry none of these work or my polystyrene! Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I suppose its good that you are only renting, at least you have the option of leaving!

have you asked the landlord about secondary glazing?
