I cringe when sports folk like John Inverdale talk about things being 'key' to a match or whatever. I cringe when people refer to dancing as 'throwing some shapes'. What modern phrases make you cringe?
The word 'gotten' there is no such word yet the Americans use it all the time.
"I've gotten a new bike" now I notice its being used over here, its such bad grammer.
Whats the matter with "I've got a new bike?"
Has anyone noticed this like I have? Its so annoying. Grrr!!
Jemisa, "gotten" is the old past perfect form of the verb 'to get' and was in use here at the time the Pilgim fathers went to America. It has died out here but the Americans still use it. It is annoying though as it no longer sounds right ot us.
When people say to me "I'd like to invite you to..." or "I'd like to ask you to.." - I always want to say "Well go ahead then, what's stopping you?" - what's with the "would"s?
