I can only think that the word must be a component of other words and that there's a clue in the details about the clown.

Joey Grimaldi was the originator of the 'white-face clown' look, so my guess is grim to create the sentence,

"In Grimsby we went to see the grimmest Grimaldi a white faced circus clown."

Aren't white-faced clowns known as "August"?
