Can anyone suggest a word for a person who judges others only on the basis of their family or background rather than their individual character & achievements?  The point is that the person being judged has no control on either their family or their background; and may well have overcome disadvantage to have achieved what they have and be quite a rounded & attractive person.

snob - definitely

Read one of the biographies of Evelyn Waugh - Willl this do - auderon waugh or the recent one of three generations of Waughs by his grandson.

Read it and cringe. God he was a snob. IF your name wasnt Mitford, forget it.

The word bigot would fit this description well
I'll go with snob, but my ex-mother-in-law's name would fit too!!! Not risking libel by using any names!
The term "inverted snob" may apply to some folk.

Thank you, I'll go with 'Snob'.

Obviously, I am already familiar with this word; it's the best I could have come up with and I am grateful that you've thought about it for a bit and have come to the same conclusion.

'Bigot' is interesting as well.  Though it may be synonymous with 'Snob', I think most people associate 'Bigotry' with extreme views rather than just general prejudice against people you deem to be a lower social class than yourself.
