In the usual direction and with the controls on their usual settings.  The expression has been borrowed from sailing, where the tack is the position of the sails which controls the direction of travel.  I would guess that the author merely meant the plane was going whee it always did.
Sorry - that should be going where it always did (No comment about the noise it was making)
