Since the majority of the inhabitants of some areas of Bradford are Muslim, were not these leaflets simply an innocent way of trying to get the message over to them in particular?

/// A Labour council was at the centre of a race row last night ///

/// Bradford City Council was accused of inciting racial hatred ///

'A race row', 'Inciting racial hatred' ????????

Is there nothing now that doesn't?

How would you feel if you got a leaflet saying: For Christ sake stop littering the streets'?

Not quite the same thing Sandy, and well you know it.

The phrase 'For Christ's Sake' is an interjection of annoyance or anger.

Whereas there was no mention of annoyance or anger attached to the leaflets.
No. AOG.

Read the words, never mind the present interpretation of them............For Christ's Sake......it is a plea. Do you think the much beleaguered Christians would be offended by such usage of their Lord's name?
No, I think AOG's right - culturally speaking "For Christ's Sake" on its own has a much broader appeal than the exact wording of the phrase implies. It's not a really Christian-specific phrase anymore.

If, on the other hand, 'For Christ's Sake' was accompanied with biblical quotes about how we should keep the streets clean (which to be fair is probably what Sandy meant), then that would be specifically targeted at Christians, and you can imagine them being quite justifiably annoyed.
AOG, how can you defend that? Why aim such it at ANY specific section of the community? A 'Keep your environment clean' leaflet would convey the message just as well without upsetting anyone. The bright spark who thought that up shouldn't be in the job! He's an idiot!
for Jesus' sake, then...

I notice no Muslims have actually complained - only Tories.
"The bright spark who thought that up shouldn't be in the job! He's an idiot! "

well the person does work for the council

case rested

Why do some always revert to unnecessary insults and rudeness, when they are disagreeing?

How would you feel Naomi if someone said "That bright spark Naomi, who suggested that shouldn't be on AnswerBank, she's an idiot"?

Not very nice is it? Disagree by all means but please refrain from the expletives.
Ha ha....I think Naomi is made of stronger stuff, AOG. Maybe you should take a leaf out of her book!
The article says that the leaflets were never published - but it would be interesting to see the Muslim-in-the-street view of it. Once again the Council have decided We Know Best. However, if you are going to do it for one religion, you'd have to do it for all of them. We have multilingual leaflets in the GP surgeries - why not multilingual litter leaflets, but leave out the religious references?

It happens all the time, I often see signs telling me to "Cut My Speed" when I am not speeding.

Those signs are aimed at a 'specific section of the community', that being the 'motoring community'.
AOG, so you think that guy's sensible? Really? Or did I hit a raw nerve? Crying 'foul' is always a poor defence, AOG, especially when the alleged 'foul' is fact - but it's clearly the only defence you can offer. :o)

Oh good grief! Are you absolutely sure you've thought that one through AOG - or do you think that message should be aimed at the non-driving community too because they're all Olympic sprinters and might cause havoc on our roads? What absolute tosh!
For Christ's Sake, it just had to be the Daily Mail.

For Christ's Sake, what a load of tosh.

For Christ's Sake, you risk having the "Unholy Trinity" of Goodlife, Truthabounds and Elderman spouting their illogical gut-rot here on "News", AOG.....

Once again in with the insults.

Of course I don't think these signs should be aimed at the non-motoring community.

If I was as rude as you, I could say it is you who is talking ****
For the sake of Ab Editor , could you stop littering our nice clean ChatterBank with all this disagreeable stuff. (joke)
AOG, oh dear! So for lack of sensible argument, you've resorted once again to jumping on the conveniently over-used 'offended' bandwagon. If anyone should be offended it's that Muslim community by being targeted with those nonsense leaflets, and by people like you who see nothing wrong in it. The person who designed that leaflet is an idiot. That's not an insult - it's a fact! And if you don't think those signs should be aimed at non-motorists, I'm at a loss to understand exactly what you're complaining about. Claptrap AOG! If it makes you feel better, you're very welcome to say anything you like to me, so go ahead. I wouldn't dream of attempting to stifle anybody's freedom of speech - but likewise when I meet with such irrationality, I have no intention of limiting mine - particularly when the cry of 'offended sensibilities' is clearly a ruse to plug a gap that cannot be adequately filled by rational argument. Grow up AOG. You're making a fool of yourself.

If cleanliness is next to godliness and I don't believe in god, is that why my house is filthy.
Ain' it der truth, Steve. ;o)
When you consider what certain individuals among the Muslim world take it upon themselves to do are persuaded to do in the name of Allah and his prophet it's maybe not a bad idea.
