This phrase:    "....goin' for the bear?"   It would be in common parlance, probably not in the UK though.  Does anyone recognise it please?

I would guess the USA or Canada. The phrase "loaded for bear" means ready to do big damage as in "the boss is after you and he's loaded for bear" "goin' for the bear"sounds like taking a big risk.

Thanks Woofgang.  I was waiting to see whether I had any other replies.  I am now beginning to wonder whether your phrase 'loaded for bear' is the phrase I shoud have used in the question.  I wrote it on a piece of paper when I was out, lost sight of it and I put the question from memory.
you are welcome.
