'as you do'

I noticed people using this rather pointless appendage at the end of a sentence; eg - 'I went swimming the other day.....as you do'

Why?

I know- "I went swimming the other day....innit" sounds much better.
I suppose it's just a variation of that or 'you know' or the vocal questionmark

Many moons ago a comedian said it in a humorous context. They therefore assume that adding it to the end of any sentence makes them sound witty.

What really annoys me round here is "I went swimming the other day, didn't I?" - as if I'd know.

It's meant to be used to point up a statement, delivered as ordinary, but which the speaker suddenly realises is not really ordinary: "I went swimming the other day; cross- channel, as you do.."

Unfunny people have decided that it can be used in all cases, though what they describe is ordinary , because it raises a smile when properly used.

Oh, god ... I say it a lot.

You say it to indicate that the activity is something that, contrary to the saying, you would not actually do routinely. eg ...

I did a sky dive from 120,000ft yesterday ... as you do.

I fell off my mountain bike and broke three ribs ... as you do.


Etc ...
