Why is it becoming increasingly common for people to hold their knife like a pencil? How do they actually cut anything like that? Were they not taught any table manners?

I notice lots of people, usually young, who have the knife and fork in the wrong hands. I don't believe they're all left handed just following another American trend; they hold the knife in the left hand, fork in the the right, like holding a pen in each hand and facing inwards; it's just wrong and looks dreadful. I don't think there's anything wrong in wanting to...

May I ask why it matters?
depends how you hold your pencil though surely?
It's nothing to do with manners - convention, perhaps.
A knife is held with your hand over the implement while a pencil is held with the majority of the hand Under it.

It matters.

Mosaic - in answer to your question "Because I find it offensive and uncouth".
ooooooooooooooooo
Most people learn how to hold cutlery from their parents (not sure who else would show you...), so it's just a case of inheriting habits.

I hold my fork in my right hand at all times, knife in my left. You would be surprised how many people get their knickers in a knot about that. And I do hold them "correctly".
It's the scooping of peas, etc onto your knife, then eating them from the knife I object to..... don't get me started on proper tools for the job.
Isn't that your problem then, rather than the knife holder :-)

as long as their mouth is closed while they are eating i don't care how they hold their knife - there are worse things to worry about
I agree diddlydo, holding your knife like a pencil is a sign of being 'common', that's what I was taught anyway.
Why am I put in mind of Lilliputians fighting wars over which end of an egg should be opened?
are you a leftie 2sp?
I'm a leftie but left hand for fork, right for knife. I hold my pen/pencil differently fromthe way I use my knife though.
I wouldn't go that far diddlydo but I was taught not to hold it like a pencil.
I'm not allowed knives.

Or pencils.
Snob.

I believe the art of good breeding is not to sneer down one's nose at another's lack of finesse but to have the ability to completely ignore it as insignificant.
Stick with the spoon Maj - less convention involved...or are there??
Nibble,
I eat my peas with honey
I've done so all my life
It makes the peas taste funny
But it keeps them on the knife

I can't hold a pencil the same way I hold a knife.
:-)) at Lie-in King
As a child being left handed was a real problem for me. The nuns gave me a lot of grief at lunch time, I was often kept in the dining room all afternoon, until you eat properly they said.
Mamya - I'd love a stick with the spoon...
