i was just thinking about it today as one of my work colleagues was talking about her brother who committed suicide. if you had stolen something, you wouldn't say "i committed theft" would you?
i'm ok thanks (not thinking of suiciding or anything)
You commit crimes and sins. Suicide has been regarded as a sin, as, for example, has adultery. Attempted suicide used to be illegal in Britain. Hence you would commit suicide.
No, it's not always the expression. At Samaritans we never use this expression. We always say taking ones own life, or thinking about taking ones own life. However, we do talk about a completed suicide.
Eddie, I thought the world's worst kamikaze pilot was 'Chicken' Teriyaki?
Yes, committed suicide is a normal phrase (as is 'killed himself', 'took his own life' etc), but I don't think the word suicide as a verb is very common at all.
